Since 1965, LORD has been active in power, signal and communications projects for major railroad and transit system clients in the United States. In Puerto Rico, LORD drew from the skills and expertise of the LORD/MASS partnership in the mainland to work on San Juan's Tren Urbano. Phase I of this high-tech transportation project comprises a 12-mile high-capacity, double track exclusive guideway system connecting key activity centers with the metropolitan region, in which 37 percent of Puerto Rico's population resides. The project became the first, entirely new U.S. rail system built utilizing a Turnkey approach. Therefore, basic issues as team leadership,  team composition, partnering, project management, and risk sharing have all being significant for its successful completion. LORD's primary area of performance was the signalling and control systems, followed by electrical distribution and lighting. LORD also provided ongoing electrical support for several years.
